Interview With Roberto Del Vecchio (The Last Hour, ex-Gothica)
05.09.09
World famous Gothic /
Gothic Ethereal / Dark Ambient band Gothica was remembered by original,
melodious and totally dark sounding, loud performances in their native Italy and
out of its borders. It is also popular with good cooperation with venerable Cold
Meat Industry label.
Unfortunately,
the band has stopped the existence in 2004. Well, participants of the band have
not left the music, Roberto Del Vecchio has organized The Last Hour project, and Alessandra Santovito - Hexperos band. Now Roberto is
more concentrated on dark sounding, and Аlessandra,
almost completely, switched to
Ambient.
Gothic.zp.ua
editor-in-chief interviews Roberto Del Vecchio and asks him about Gothica band and that music which Mr. Del Vecchio
plays in the solo project – The Last Hour.
Gothic.zp.ua: Who was an initiator of Gothica
organisation?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“I created Gothica at the end of
1994 together with Alessandra
Santovito.”
Gothic.zp.ua: Why have you decided to use classical poetry as lyrics for your
songs?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“We
used these poems because the images and the atmospheres which they evoke were
near to Gothica musical concepts.”
Gothic.zp.ua: How many concerts has Gothica given? Which was the biggest
one?
Roberto Del Vecchio:““We played few concerts and the
most important ones were in
Gothic.zp.ua: When Gothica became the famous
band?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“I think after the issue of “The
Cliff of Suicide”. It was an album with critical and public
success.”
Gothic.zp.ua: Why did Gothica break up in
2004?
Roberto Del Vecchio:"Life is strange and people changes.
It was a very hard decision, but it was the right one.The end of love story and
the incompatibility of character were the main reasons of Gothica
split."
Gothic.zp.ua: What was the reason to name your new project The Last
Hour?
Roberto Del Vecchio:"When I conceived the idea of this
project, I began to compose music to communicate with the universe, with the
silence of God. “The Last Hour” is the door towards the infinite, the
unconceivable worlds, the cosmic space, the unknown.”
Gothic.zp.ua: What does clock as a symbol mean to
you?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“I quote from the German philosopher Arthur
Schopenhauer: ‘Such men are like clockwork, which is wound up, and goes it knows
not why. Every time a man is begotten and born, the clock of human life
is wound up anew to repeat once more its same old tune that has already been
played innumerable times, movement by movement and measure by measure, with
insignificant variations’.”
Gothic.zp.ua: What are the messages of your
compositions?
Roberto Del Vecchio:"The main message of the album is
the disillusion caused by reality and by Nature`s indifference. But again
dreams are the only way out against the grim truth. “The Last Hour” is the fight
between illusion and reality, life and dream. Like in a black and white
photography, lights and shadows intertwine to draw infinite arabesques of love
and death among the paths of restlessness. Sweet, dreamy, hot, foggy, cold, dark
lights filter through multiform branches in the way of existence.”
Gothic.zp.ua: Could you tell us your vision about what art
is?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“Art is beauty, pureness, freedom,
dream, the expression of deepest feelings. It can help human beings to
elevate their minds.”
Gothic.zp.ua: What kind of music do you listen
to?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“I listen to several kinds of music.
My favotite artists are: Dead Can Dance, Joy Division, The Cure,
Einstürzende Neubauten, Diamanda Galas, Death In June, Depeche Mode, Björk,
Philip Glass, Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi…”
Gothic.zp.ua: What makes you inspired?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“Each experience that I have, the
universe and the art that surround
me.”
Gothic.zp.ua: Do you use PC while working with your musical material? What
software do you prefer?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“Yes, I use PC and I work above all
with Cubase and Reason.”
Gothic.zp.ua: Your favourite musical instrument is a synthesizer, isn’t
it?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“Yes, it’s my favourite instrument
to compose music together with the
sampler.”
Gothic.zp.ua: Have you already had concerts as The Last Hour project? If
yes are they successful?
Are you going to
perform soon somewhere in the Eastern
Europe?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“No, at the moment I don’t play live
and
there aren’t live in program in the near
future.“
Gothic.zp.ua: What is your attitude to the Gothic
subculture?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“I like Gothic for cultural reasons and for his artistic
aspects
such as painting, sculpture, architecture and literature. But if we talk
about music, I’m bound up above all with the origins of the movement, with
post-punk bands such as Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The
Banshees…“
Gothic.zp.ua: What is your favourite country and
why?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“
Gothic.zp.ua: Have you ever been to
Roberto Del Vecchio:“No, but I hope to come in your
beautiful countries soon.”
Gothic.zp.ua: What do you think about Eastern European Gothic
music?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“Sorry, but I don’t know this
scene.”
Gothic.zp.ua: What are you going to create in the near
future?
Roberto Del Vecchio:“The first full-length CD of my side
project Les Jumeaux Discordants will be out soon for the French label Athanor
Records. More info:
